In Kazakhstan, the tax on tourists, the so-called bed tax, will be abolished in the near future. This was announced by Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports Yerzhan Erkinbaev at a briefing at the Central Communications Service.
"We have decided that the bed tax must be terminated. The system creates certain inconveniences for domestic businesses and for visiting foreign tourists. Despite the fact that about 500 million tenge have been collected throughout the country since the introduction of the system, we decided to suspend the bed tax as soon as possible. We will urgently make changes to the order, and the tourist tax will be suspended,” Erkinbaev said.
The collection of bed tax, or tax on tourists, is a collection of funds for the development of tourism infrastructure and meeting the tourism needs of the country.
In Kazakhstan, they planned to approve a bed tax in the amount of 1 to 5 percent of the cost of a tourist’s hotel stay. Business, for its part, was indignant at the “lack of a clear mechanism for collecting, transferring and using the collected funds.”
